The name Art Brut goes back to the French artist (painter, wine dealer, sculptor) Jean Dubuffet . It describes the autodidactic and original art of people with intellectual disabilities, laypersons or children .
This art movement is also occasionally referred to as the "outsider art" . Charity art often heard in this context. The authors of Art Brut, the works of which have arisen away from the established art system, include both people with mental illness or multiple disabilities as well as the media, prisoners, outsiders or simply socially inappropriate.
Meaning and origin
This "unbodied, raw" art flow was justified in 1945 and sees itself away from established artificial currents or art forms. The works, originally created by psychiatric patients, prisoners and outcasts, illustrate their fragile state of mind and their unorthodox perspectives.
Art brut is therefore free of academic-artistic training and arises from an inner need for expression that the creatively active person fulfills in different ways and can thus make part of his innermost artistically visible. The autodidact works primarily for itself and not for an audience. Commercial considerations also play no role in most cases.
The term "Art Brut" has now become internationally prevailed and has made a great contribution to recognition of marginalized art (art of population groups or social groups that are urged to take part in society and can therefore only take part in cultural, political and economic life) .

Demolation of social conventions
The art of Art Brut is a memorial of the avant -garde zeitgeist of the 20th century. These works come from autodidacts that follow their own instincts and do not orientate themselves on existing styles or movements. The results are original, emotional masterpieces that are unique to each artist and differ from those inspired by others.

Although Jean Dubuffet, as a supposed founder of this art flow, has no completed art studies, he is still seen as a pioneer of this movement. He advocated the values of the company outed by society and looked for a path to promote horror of mental illnesses
This ultimately led him to shape the term kind of brood to legitimize the works of art in this group.
From the edge of society to the mainstream
In the mid -1940s, Jean Dubuffet began to curate works of this art flow. In the late 70s, he opened the Collection de l'Art brood in Lausanne, Switzerland, to greet the general public in the world of alternative arts.
Since then, numerous other institutions have followed his role model, such as La Maison Rouge & the Musée des Arts Décoratif in Paris, who honored the artists on the sidelines of the company with other exhibitions.
Although Art Brut was not interested in a public judgment, such exhibitions brought their unconventional works to the awareness of the mainstream culture group.
Important outsider artists and important pioneers
In addition to Dubuffet, Adolf Wölfi is a remarkable outsider artist. His difficult childhood brought him to prison and after his release, schizophrenia was diagnosed.

Adolf Wölfli is now taken into account as an important artist of the 20th century and his work is exhibited worldwide. When he became at the age of 35 in the Psychiatric Institute Waldau near Bern, he began to draw. Wölfli started to reorganize his life and the world. He put more than 25,000 pages on paper that were later published. In it he formulated a spectacular youth and a magnificent future.
The first public exhibitions with drawings by Adolf Wölfli took place in 1921 - still in his lifetime. After his death, the French artist Jean Dubuffet presented works Wölflis as part of the collection of the "Compagnie de l'Art brut" in Paris. In 1963 he was part of the exhibition "Image of the Mordner" in the Kunsthalle Bern, curated by Harald Szeemann. In 1976, visitors were able to experience the artist's first comprehensive show at the Bern Art Museum, which was subsequently shown in Europe and the USA. In 2017, the exhibition " Adolf Wölfli. A Kingdom of 25,000 pages" announced its work of the Japanese public.

Aloïse Corbaz , Augustin Lesage and Alfonso Ossorio are other important representatives of the kind of breed. Although their works are all different, they all have the same freedom in shape, rich colors and child's quality, which indicates the lack of formal training.
Controversy
Due to their extraordinary origins, it is not surprising that Art Brut often stimulates discussions and sometimes heated debates. This is due to the sometimes frightening and unethical topics that represent the artists from the view. This includes, for example, violence or sexualization of children . Nevertheless, they are not considered as complex and analyzed as conventional artists, since the works were not originally designed for exhibition purposes.
Instead, they are simply spontaneous - and sometimes unadorned - reactions to experienced experiences and the individual evaluation of it.
Cultural recognition for Art BRUT is increasing
Through various exhibitions (e.g. Outsiders hiking exhibition ), Art Brut has strongly gained cultural recognition and finds attention in the successful promotion of artistic work for therapeutic purposes.
A separate segment of the art trade is now also specializing in international trade fairs (e.g. the art of art or the New York Outsider Art Fair ) in the autodidactic, unobstructed art. Art brood works that were created by the best -known representatives of the scene and have long been considered to be generally recognized art are often offered at auctions and achieve high results.
