Jean Philippe Arthur Dubuffet was born on July 31, 1901 in Le Havre/France, the son of a wealthy wine dealer. He is one of the most prominent representatives of French post -war art , as a painter, draftsman, print graphic artist and sculptor.
In particular, he achieved international fame through his way of the destruction of the Second World War with layered material images.
Jean Dubuffet (1901 - 1985) was a French painter and sculptor and is considered a master of European modernity . Dubuffet's work is characterized by a reaction against prevailing ideas of high culture, beauty and good taste.
For over four decades, he was both productive and keen to experiment and expressed his creativity in many forms, including writing and music. He used a variety of artistic techniques, including painting, drawing, print graphics, large-format outer sculptures and work that combines painting, sculpture , dance and theater with live performances.
School and professional career
After the elementary school, he graduated from high school (1918) and then went to Paris, where he studied language and music and literature. He broke off this studies at the Académie Julian after 6 months. He wanted to become a painter and teach himself to paint.

After his military period (1923), his doubts about the cultural values gave him the painting (1924). He traveled to Buenos Aires for a year and returned to Le Havre in 1925 to enter his father's wine trade.
Return to painting
It was not until 1942, after a long break and 3 years as a soldier in World War II, that he finally found painting for painting. Dubuffet sold the wine business to only devote itself to art. As early as 1944 and 1945, he presented his works in the René Drouin gallery in Paris.
In his first phase of work, Dubuffet follows the reduced -shaped, real proportions Ignoring painting naive and childlike art . His works show, for example, rural idylls with cyclists that pass the grazing cows in the landscape .

In 1945 the artist shaped the term "art brood" . He consistently collected works by naive artists, children and mentally handicapped people. During his trip to Switzerland, where he visited psychiatric institutions, he became aware of the works of Adolf Wölfli , Aloyse Corbaz and Heinrich Anton Müller . He joined for an art that lacked any relation to the art world and was free of academic roots.
By acquiring the work OG artist, he created the foundation for the later world -famous exhibition "Collection de l 'Art brut". Through the collection of art of mentally ill and other social outsiders, Dubuffet became the main representative of the "Outsider Art" .

The exhibition celebrated the French artist Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985), one of the most unique and provocative voices in the art of post-war modernity. He shouted at conventional ideas of beauty and tried to capture the poetry of everyday life in a dark, more authentic way.
This is the first major overview of his work in Great Britain for over 50 years, which shows four decades of his career, from early portraits and fantastic statues to butterfly assemblies and huge colorful canvases.

Jean Dubuffet: Urban Imagination
Curator Dr. Sophie Berrebi introduces "Jean Dubuffet and the City" at Hauser & Wirth Zurich, the first presentation that focuses on researching the role of the city in Dubuffet for four decades of artistic achievements and emphasizes the changing representation of urban characters and visual by the artist, as well as the experimental dynamics of Paris.
With over 50 significant paintings, work on paper, architecture and sculpture models from the 1940s to 1980s, the exhibition of Dubuffet's vision shifts reveals from the representation of imagination and evocation to design an urban imagination, and enables a new understanding of the artistic work and the importance of the city.
Dr. Sophie Berrebi, extraordinary professor (UD1) at the University of Amsterdam, is a art historian and specializes in the work of Dubuffet and contemporary art. In 2017, she recruited the exhibition "Jean Dubuffet: The Deep End" in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
An extensive scientific publication entitled "Dubuffet and the City. People, Place and Urban Space" , researched and written by Dr. Berrebi and published by Hauser & Wirth Verlag, accompanies the exhibition.

Development and growth of Art brood
- 1947: Foundation of the first art brut art gallery, the foyer de l 'art brut - in collaboration with Michel Taipié.
- 1947: Foundation of the Companie de l'Art brut association, the aim of which is to collect, explore and make outsid art.
- 1949: Exhibition of the collection of Art Brut works (200 works by 63 artists) in the Renè Drouin gallery

Autobiography and death of the artist Jean Dubuffet
In the last year before his death, Jean Dubuffet wrote his autobiography . He died on May 12, 1985 in Paris. His estate is managed by the Foundation Dubuffet in Paris, where you can also visit your former studio. Jean Dubuffet was a wine dealer, painter, sculptor, writer, collage and action artist.
