The exhibition "We Love Picasso" in the Kunstforum East German gallery focuses on the perception of the artist in the art scene of Central and Eastern Europe.
Picasso's anti -war art
During the National Socialist occupation, Picasso stayed in his chosen hometown Paris. In 1944 he decided to join the Communist Party. Although Picasso explained that he did not primarily use his art politically, he nevertheless created an iconic anti -war picture with his masterpiece "Guernica" from 1937, which illustrated the delusion of destruction in the Spanish Civil War.

His dust of peace also became a frequently used motif on posters from world peace congresses in which Picasso took part, occasionally as a speaker. In August and September 1948, he took part in a peace congress of the intellectuals in Wrocław and Warsaw, in which he received an award from the Polish President and an exhibition of his ceramics in Wrocław opened.
On this occasion, the artist also traveled Krakow and Auschwitz.
Czech cubism
Although there is no documentation of Picasso in Czechoslovakia, he had direct exchange with Czech artists in Paris. There he also scored the Czech art historian Vincenc Kramář , who played an important role in making Picasso's early work and the work of George Braque known in Czechoslovakia.
As early as 1910, Kramář Picasso collected - initially privately and later as director of the predecessor institution of today's National Gallery in Prague. Kramář was also a great supporter of the Czech Cubists. The movement of "Czech Cubism" developed into a broad movement that included all areas of everyday life.
On Picasso's traces in Poland and Czechoslovakia
An exhibition is presented in the KOG that follows Picasso's traces in Eastern European countries such as Poland and Czechoslovakia. The presentation of his works in exhibitions and the associated reporting are important factors to understand its influence on this region.
Not only his style, topics and motifs should be considered, but also the individual positions and developments of selected artists. Some were only based on Picasso at the beginning of their career, while others were later inspired by his figure language.
The Bohemian artist Erika Streit Picasso initially rejected Picasso before she got into his work in the 1940s and dealt with him in ceramics, paintings and graphics.
