Who was the person Günter Grass?
Günter Wilhelm Grass was born on October 16, 1927 in Danzig-Langfuhr as the son of a merchant family and died on April 13, 2015 in Lübeck. He was one of the most important German writers of the post -war period.

Less known to many people is likely to be the fact that the sculptor was also a passionate sculptor, painter and graphic artist and also left a number of works of art.
Grass was a member of Group 47 since 1957 and, with his debut novel, became the sheet metal drum in 1959 an internationally highly respected author of German post -war literature.
Grass' work and role as an author and political intellectual was and is the subject of extensive research as well as media interest at home and abroad. From 1961 to 2005 he was publicly committed to SPD politicians such as Willy Brandt, Gerhard Schröder and Heide Simonis.
Grass' central motivation was the loss of his homeland Gdansk and the examination of the National Socialist past , which is often reflected in his work.
His books were translated into numerous languages and partially filmed. In 1999 he received the Nobel Prize for Literature and was honored with a variety of other awards.
Günter Grass wrote, drawn and designed books until the last minute of his life. The list of work of his graphic work "in copper, on stone", in 1992 was the first literary title in Steidl Verlag .
Political commitment
Throughout his life, Günter Grass intervened in socio -political debates. For example, he supported Willy Brandt's reconciliation policy with Poland and was actively campaigning for the SPD. Grass triggered violent controversy, most recently in 2012 because of an Israel-critical poem.
His autobiographical band "During the skins of the onion" caused discussions from 2006. Surprisingly, Grass made it public that at the end of the Second World War, he was a member of the Waffen-SS at the end of the Second World War. The author was subsequently accused of having concealed his SS belonging for too long, while he had repeatedly publicly criticized others because of their Nazi past.
