Friedrich achieved an incomparable metaphysical transparency in his meticulously painted painting: in 1815, Western Pomerania fell as part of the Vienna Congress on Prussia. Friedrich's romantic port scene is also an allegory on the historical event: in the foreground you can see three people in a rowboat, the sailors between anchoring in front of anchor on a ship lying on the horizon with Swedish flag. The whole scene is immersed in a black red-gold color mood: analogous to the new German flag, the colors mean honor, freedom and fatherland. Original: around 1815/16, oil on canvas, 90 x 71 cm, Charlottenhof Castle, Potsdam.
