Munch made a total of four versions in different techniques and sizes: two in tempera on cardboard (from 1893 and 1910) and two in pastel on wood (1893 and 1895), whereby the dimensions of 74 x 56 cm to 91 x 73.5 cm vary; There are also some smaller lithographs. The version of 1895 achieved almost $ 120 million at an auction in 2012 and is therefore one of the most expensive paintings. There are different theories about the history of the "scream". One states that Munch had visited an exhibition with Inca mummies with Paul Gauguin in 1889 with which he was inspired, another, in the picture the reddish sky was captured, which was caused by the outbreak of the Krakatau volcano in 1883.
