Ernst Ludwig Kirchner had lived in Berlin since 1915 and devoted himself to the sophisticated city life, which he represented with sharp contours and a pronounced feeling of color in his grotesque. However, the First World War led to an abrupt end of this phase: after entering military service, Kirchner suffered a psychological collapse and was released in 1917 for health reasons. In Switzerland he sought relaxation and developed into a natural artist in a second creative phase, which expressed the alpine landscape with bright colors and flowing shapes.
