Frida Kahlo - a unique life path
Frida Kahlo's works of art, drawings and portraits can now be admired in museums around the world. Kahlo is seen as a symbolic figure of the Mexican Revolution , as an icon of the anti -colonial protest and as a pioneer of the modern ideal of women - powerful, visionary and consistently loving freedom.
Her artistic career began in Mexico City, where she was enthusiastic about drawing and engraving. After a serious bus accident, she devoted herself intensively to painting. In her beginnings, she mainly created self -portraits and portraits of people in her environment.
Due to the influences of revolutionary movements in Mexican politics and the European avant -garde, it developed its distinctive aesthetics over time.
Kahlo combined Mexican popular culture with modernist art and was viewed both as a magical realist and as a representative of contemporary currents who searched for her indigenous roots for a clearly Mexican art. Together with her husband Diego Rivera , with whom she led an eventful relationship, she significantly shaped the modern art scene of Mexico.
The relationship between Rivera and Kahlo is now seen as a legendary story of love and pain. However, their fame has led to their personality and their original artistic purpose distorted, which led to fantastic interpretations of their life and work.
Kahlos career was promoted by meetings with European surrealists, although she had a little opinion of them. The French surrealist André Breton described Kahlo as a local representative of surrealism. Although Kahlo on the shaft of surrealistic intrigue ride, she considered surrealism to be bourgeois and not radical enough. In her endless examination of European philosophical topics, she was a contradictory voice in the center, which did not have the potential to be the authentic voice of the periphery.
However, their ability to convey a clear and active message for their art abroad was affected by their own image of artists. Kahlo always presented herself as an autodidactic, naive artist who was inspired and organically shaped by Mexican culture.
What she saw as a possibility to tie herself more closely to people meant that she was unable to communicate the craft, revolutionary ideology or the well thought -out aesthetics that enabled them into their work and thus control their legacy abroad. Therefore, her works are often presented and understood in addition to those of Diego Rivera, but also Salvador Dali .
Although some considered their work as daring and influential than that of their husband, Kahlo was in the shadow of Diego Rivera during his lifetime. Her lifelong health problems sometimes prevented them from traveling or promoting their work as Rivera.
It was only in the 1970s and then again again in the 1990s Kahlos, Kehllos was repeated new attention and was seen as an anti-colonial activist, feminist artist or queer icon.
